Right hand tanks.

Post by Vortz marcos »

I'm currently building a mini up as our family car. It's a 1979 1000 auto. When it's done we will be taking it on a road trip of Europe. I would like to increase its fuel capacity, which involves a second fuel tank. I looked at the prices of new ones  . Are there any alternatives? I've seen people modify left hand tanks but the thought of welding a fuel tank even if it has been ventilated fills me with dred.
Are there any other options?

Second hand ones do come up from time to time, but on a budget modifying a LHT is by far the least expensive option.

Does anyone know if the Plastic right hand tanks are still available?

I ran a Mini in the 70's with a 10gall Morris Oxford tank.
Fairly easy fit (bolted up on the seat back) but need to juggle around boot items.
A couple of pics of one I've got now but not going to fit. I'm just over the border.

you could always fit the later 7.5 gallon tank. I've never fitted one but I can't imagine it being too difficult.

I know everyone is different, but having done BIG miles across Europe and the States in an assortment of vehicles, I would suggest that the larger LH tank is more than adequate for all but endurance racing distances.
At a nominal 35mpg, by the time you need to fill up with fuel you've been travelling for ~3 hours and at least one member of the car will usually need a wee or just want to stretch their legs, which is a good thing for the driver to do anyway.

Time rather than distance is usually the precurser to a stop, and even in a twin-tanked S I found that same rule applied, so we just topped the tanks off because we'd stopped rather than because we needed fuel.
Metric is for people who can't do fractions.

Agreed. A much cheaper and easier solution, and doesn't require a huge hole being cut in the body!

I did the same. It was the only way to get to the halfway fuel stop on a Motoring News event in my 997. I put the spare inside the car and fitted a 110ah battery.

I used a van/pickup petrol tank, works nicely utilising an extended filler hose!

No it isn't, it's completely the wrong shape.

It could however be a Serck services one, these were offered as "factory RHT's in the very, very early dary before the genuine tank came along.
