1128 gearbox with thin flange 1275 s block

Post by dgear1984 »

I am in the process of building up / researching my 1275s engine rebuild.

At the moment I have a standard pre a+ 998 and 1128 gearbox with mini remote diff housing in my mk1, which I am hoping to leave complete and sell as a complete unit. Also.....

I have a thin flange 1275 s block and a 480 crank and an austin 1100 1128 gearbox with the close ratio's in it. Also have a 3.44 diff and hardy outputs etc.

I intend to put the close ratio gears (laygear and 1st motion) into a 1128 mini remote diff 1128 box, assuming i can find another one one cheap enough, worst case I will use the one in the car already. Now, are all the 1128 gearboxes the same, i know mk2's had the 1128 fitted with the 1275s, so hopefully i will not in counter any problems there?? I realise the primary gear will be different and I have one of those already.

What is the correct transfer case (clutch housing) and clutch cover for the 1128 box when used with the 1275s, Im not sure of the part number of the ones i have on the car at the moment, once again would like to get another set so i can leave the 998 complete but I need to know what I am trying to buy first.

Thanks Dave

ps. I suppose while I am here any idea on a valuation of the 998 and 1128 box engine complete and just the 998 on its own? I suppose that will give me the best indication on weather to source other parts or use what I have. Recent rebuild (will have covered about 500 miles), no smoke, standard condition and leaded head. Sold in a condition like this without the manifold or carbs.

Hi

I spent some time looking for a 1128 for my early MkII SDL so I could have a four syncro box. I was searching the auction site mostly and found complete 998 engine and gearboxes seemed to go for less than gearboxes on there own, possibly because they are easier to ship and/or easier to collect??

I bought a couple to go in the shed recently for tinkering with.
I won a pre A plus 998mini engine with gearbox for £50 on the auction site, I was the only bidder, maybe I was the only one prepared to go and collect it and lift it into the boot of the car. Just the remote change mechanism on there own can go for around £20-£40.
22G846 four syncro's seem to go for a lot less than 1128's for some reason as well. I guess you wouldn't want one of those if its for a Cooper S though, I read on here that they were fitted to elfs and hornets but I also have one with an 1100/1300 type remote so they must have been used on other cars as well.

Sorry I cant help with the other stuff you've mentioned. If you decided to sell the complete engine on auction site perhaps consider offering shipping on a pallet.

Cheers
Ollie

1128 cases are (functionally) all the same. Make sure you buy one with a mini diff housing (bolts from the bottom).

As for the clutch housing, any with the same size of idler bearing and first motion bearing race that you will be using, will do. I'm not into A+ stuff, but I think there are other sizes of these bearings... and adapters too. But to be safe, try to find an early housing, it can't be that difficult there. Plus, a modern housing would look out of place in your replica.

From memory, some numbers that will work: 22A524, 22A108, 22A208, early ones from the 1300 series with the breather.

In doubt, when buying just take your idler gear with you and try it.

The clutch housing off my MK 2 S (1128 box) is 22G 998.
