Re: Mk1 roof lining
Heres a few from my experiences, and I'm sure others will chip in.
I put vaseline on the rail to help it slide. Back section up first then slide it back. Make sure the wiring for the interior light is in the right place.
Tilt and lift the front section, again the vaseline helps as you slide it up and forwards. Ideally, tape a piece of old plastic carton where it joins to protect the rail paint, or get an assistant to hold some in place. It pulls out easily afterwards, and also protects the rear trim from friction
Be careful that the roof lining is not hanging by the way, as that can be a pain, or if the new roof lining is too big.
Good luck and just be as patient as you can be

I always lube up with candle wax. Just "scribble" a candle all round the runner in the cant rail. Helps it slide in & doesn't leave a residue.

Re: Mk1 roof lining
Now you come to mention it

Did the paint get scratched at the last push to get the front section up? That's where the thin plastic can guard it either side.
