Drill block for breather , any issues ?

Post by Exminiman »

Looking to improve breathing of in line block by drilling hole in mech petrol pump boss , adding couple of studs and fitting MED breather.

There looks like there is plenty of metal here, as i assume its same as block already factory drilled for petrol pump

Any one done this or got any tips please, really dont want to turn the block into an anchor

with this type of breather you risk to have oil leaking at high rev

Could be better to put a MED rocker cover with its oil catch can

I've used this breather several times . It's excellent , make sure you run the tube on it straight up ... ken

Cheers, do you know of any issues with drilling my own hole in the boss?

I just wondered, in case block thickness at this point was varied, depending on intention to prepare foe pump or not ....

My assumption is not.....but just in case

Just in case (excuse the pun), could a transfer gear housing breather work for you?

Ours had one fitted way before they did it from the factory, just a threaded tube ??

Never had a problem when we did it....we were using breathers on that fuel pump area as far back as I remember....however, as previously stated...run the exit pipe upwards....we used a 'T' and connected the valve cover pipe to the T then, a larger hose from the T to the catch tank. Just a personal preference....running separate pipes may be better overall.
This setup coupled with a timing cover (which you have) and a flywheel housing breather solved most of the 1300 block problems.

That is my breather hole of choice. As has already been said, make sure the pipe goes straight up. I make a steel one similar to this.

The one above is an early Downton engine.

The similar ones that I made were made out of 25mm steel tube, with a 40mm steel can on the top. This in turn had a 12.5mm tip on the end which was connected to the oil catch tank by a length of rubber pipe.

Cheers for that Mark, helps with the routing.

As no one has raised any issues, will drill and tap block here as block is not pre-drilled for fuel pump.
