Alloy Front Hubs

Post by 33JOY »

At the risk of asking a dumb question...

I have tried to fit Mini Sport alloy front hubs to my Mini but have found that the CV boot is (just) rubbing on the housing (see below):

Is there something obvious that I am missing here (eg I'm using the wrong type of CV boot perhaps)?

Any thoughts/suggestions gratefully received. Thanks.

I would take a little bit out of the hub with a belt sander . You won't need that much clearance .... Ken

Try the late genuine CV Boots, they are expensive, but should clear.

Question on the Hubs - How do you change the bearings in them?

I bought some cheap boots recently, but had a "guilt-trip" very shortly afterwards...

I then bought some of those "genuine" ones at about 3 times the price and looked at
the cheap vs not cheap side by side. From what I could see, it most certainly looked
like the cheap ones and the genuine ones CAME OUT OF THE SAME MOULD.
:?

The random numbers and general writing stamped into the mould was identical on the
two versions. Maybe there are different varieties of "cheap", where some of them
are actually "genuine"?

I am generally a sucker for buying anything with a "genuine" sticker on it, but this
experiment has made me wonder if I am just being a complete mug.

... back to the hubs...

I am wondering if the caliper retaining threads have been changed to 3/8" UNC
instead of UNF, as coarse threads are generally used in ally?

In answer to Spider's question, I'd say either very carefully with a press, or otherwise
even more carefully with a slightly smaller hammer than is used to do the job normally.

Interesting what you've found on the CV Boots. The 'Genuine' ones that I have previously bought from Mini Spares are like nothing else I've found previously, I found them really good quality, had a proper rubber feel about them instead of plastic and had some thickness to them. I don't mind the money but they did raise the eyebrows when I added them to the order.

I'm of little doubt that the same ones can be bought as Non-genuine, only in a different box (I think mine came in a Unipart Box).

In regards to the wheel bearings, yeah, that was what I always thought, I'm not sure how many times you'd be able to change a bearing before the hub become toast. I know that KAD offer similar hubs however they sell theirs with the bearings already fitted as I'm told that the heat the hub before fitting the bearing, which is excellent for the initial fitting, but what after that?

I've no experience with Alloy Hubs and so my concerns maybe unfounded, after all we do get a good few goes at gearboxes.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the threaded holes had helicoils in them. Not sure where that was though.

Very useful photo, thanks.

And thanks to everyone who has responded to my initial query, via posts, PMs and a phone call (thanks Brian).

By the way Peter the CV boot on my KAD shot is the one that comes with the Minispares front CV joints.
It's part number GSV1055 and it looks to me like it would resolve your problem.
The 'folds' in your CV boot look much larger than the CV joint itself whereas the GSV1055 are all smaller.
