Wheel weight clearance.

Post by InimiaD »

I hit upon a novel way of tackling the problem of wheel weights and clearance issues with alloy 4 pot calipers.

I "borrowed" some lead off my neighbours roof, then trimmed a piece of the lead to the weight of the original wheel weight. (give or take a gram).

Then stuck them on the wheel where the original weights were using impact adhesive.

The advantage of using lead is that it can be further flattened to gain even more clearance being a softer material than the currently available wheel weights.
So far, so good. I have a couple of mm extra clearance from the caliper and they haven't fallen off, yet. :)

Due to lead and "Yellow Smarties" being bad for you these days,
I have to recycle my old stick-on weights...

I use double sided foam tape that I get from B&Q.
This allows me to pick the stuff back off again each time
I have to re-balance the wheels.

At the track, a common additional step is to cover the weights with a layer of aluminum foil tape. It's thin, highly sticky, and can be pressed down to conform well to the surface.
