Machining costs

Post by wantafaster1 »

I'm very much out of the loop of engine building, it's been years.

What should I expect to pay for an overbore, line boring the mains and an acid dip?

I paid £120 + Vat for a re-bore 12 months ago, Not including Shells , So i reckon you are up to £200 - £250 with line bore,
Crank grind is again around the same money , Nothing aint cheap.

I have to drop off several engines for bore, clean, hone, grind shaft, cam bearings and freeze plugs. Rods reconditioned with new bolts, assembly balanced, guides, valves and hard exhaust seats. I will get a updated price list. Problem I'm running into is finding someone to bore under 2 5/8 block. I'm currently paying $160. US for 1275 bore, clean , hone. I have to pay $280. to bore a 850/998. I have no complaint with his quality, turn around or attitude. I currently have an 850 a 998 and a 997 to bore. As well as 4 1275 s two metros and two SPI s Steve (CTR)

Thanks very much folks, what I was expecting. I'm unsure whether to get it line bored or not. The main housings seem round but the finish is awful, the previous one looked almost honed.
Bit paranoid about the brand new crank and that.

Line bore it better safe than sorry and you will know it's all square!

Not that it means anything, I ran an auto machine shop till retirement 15 years ago. I now have a little classic mini only shop for fun and possible profit. Ask the machine shop how much to check line bore? The A+ blocks I have been dealing with all appear to have been honed after line bore. The A and other early blocks look as if they were line bored and left with machine finish. The shop I retired from just purchased a new Sunnen Line hone machine. Just as when I worked there, if I want the tooling to do engines as small as a mini I'll need to buy the tooling. With early engines line bore and balance are two very nice things to do. Steve (CTR)
