Re: Brake pedals - Drum vs Disc
Does anyone know whether the pedals themselves are different between a RHD car and a LHD car? MiniSpares list a disc brake pedal on their website (out of stock), but it is clearly listed as an RHD pedal.
I previously understood there was no difference.

There is indeed a difference. One is straight, the other one is bent.

Re: Brake pedals - Drum vs Disc
In my world, the laws of physics prevail .... as properly stated by Vergard. Smiffy's diagram is irrelevant to any discussion on pedal weight/leverage.... although we might infer a slightly higher unloaded pedal..
This might be important - if the pedal is in danger of running into the floor (like a clutch pedal) before full force can be applied. But you need to look at the angle between the lines joining the pivot/master pin hole and the pivot/back of pedal. ... if you are concerned.
Must admit I find my drum pedal/disc setup indistinguishable from my full S setup.
Maybe if you don't like the relative pedal heights - when heel and toeing or otherwise - you could try the alternative?
Cheers, Ian

Re: Brake pedals - Drum vs Disc
Below shows the difference between 3 types of pedal.
They all had the pivot and clevis pin hole fixed to show the difference.
The first pedal is a standard drum brake pedal off my mk1, the second pedal is a genuine S pedal and the third is a late 80's pedal with the pad cut down.
The S pedal had the pad approx 15mm higher than the S pedal and the late pedal is another 20mm higher than the S.

Re: Brake pedals - Drum vs Disc
I had terrible pedal (very low) on my Mk3 drum braked Mini when i converted to S brakes, BUT i was using a twin brake master (no booster)
I took the pedal out, replaced it with a 1981 pedal box, which has the brake pedal cranked away from the floor, and bang, i had good brakes.
Later I replaced the S calipers with a set of 4 pots from Guru Richy, still with the dual master.

Re: Brake pedals - Drum vs Disc
Hi all, this weekend I took my mini spares single line servo off my 63, because I don't really like the feel, although it stopped ok.
The brakes consist of 7.5 disks, S calipers, green stuff pads, tin master cylinder and what I think is a drum brake pedal. Now it's removed they are decidedly wooden, I'm not sure I could exert enough pressure to lock the wheels, it just pulls up steady. The pedal doesn't go to the floor, so it's not that. Where would u look next? The pads? They were on the car when I got it and seemed to be ok with the servo assistance, but I can't really find a good word said about them? I haven't really got any heat in them to see if they improve, but would rather a pad that works well from cold anyway. I don't really want to replace the servo. Any suggestions? Thanks.

You have just got used to the servo, in a day or two the brakes will feel "normal" again.
As long as the pedal doesn't have "slack" in it, I wouldn't worry too much.

Haha so what your saying is, I should man up! Well I only ran round for half an hour or so, so I'll give it some more time and see what I think. My clubby is unservoed but is to different to compare, it's a lot lighter, has mini sport 7.9 4pots and a KAD pedal box. That pulls up just fine, but like I say, chalk and cheese. Would peolpe suggest some 1144 pads?

Try softer pads.yorkspv wrote:Hi all, this weekend I took my mini spares single line servo off my 63, because I don't really like the feel, although it stopped ok.

Re: Brake pedals - Drum vs Disc
Could someone measure the thickness of the 2 pedals to help identify ? for the folks that dont know what we have fitted? That would be handy.
edit, mine looks to be a drum brake pedal on a disk brake car judging by the pedal plate size and poor brake pedal. thickness of the pedal is 3.5mm ,I am going to look into this for sure

Re: Brake pedals - Drum vs Disc
I fitted green stuff pads on mine & I hated them, I use ordinary black pads, great for everyday use.

Green stuff are shit, End of. Mintex 1144 (irrc) pads are best ones I've used actually stop the car pretty damn well.
