Standard steel wheel brake clearence.

Post by Mark1Peachey »

Can a standard 10" steel wheel be fitted over 7.5" cooper "s" disc brakes? I wish to use "s" disc brakes on a morris mini minor but retain standard wheels and wheel trims.

Some will tell you you can - but I have never (sic) found a set that will rotate when bolted over S calipers.

This leads me to believe there are (at least) two different specifications for "standard" steel wheels....

Having been brought up on early 3.5" wheels (non-S), I learned that they would not clear S calipers. Years later I got in a "discussion" with some know-it-all who insisted they all would fit. Turned out we were both wrong. Some do and some don't with later wheels (70s+) most likely to fit. A while back I went through about 20 different 3.5" wheels and seven fit the S calipers I was testing them against.

I have also found the above to be true. Some will & some won't. But they nearly all will with a 3/8" spacer. This gives enough clearance for them to fit over the callipers but they don't stick out too far from the wheel arches.

My standard 3.5" wheels have been used with 7.5" Cooper S disc brakes without the need for spacers. there is probably some truth in the fact that later wheels will fit, mine are 1981.

I had a similar problem with rose petal wheels on my Historic, and my calipers have been ground down. To give more clearance you can fit a washer between the caliper and the hub to add a little more space.
