Square Hole Hub Caps
1966 Austin Cooper S
LHD, Wet, Personal Export
I seldom see these hub caps which I believe are original to my “S”.
I can not find any info.
Can anyone provide Info?
Also they are very hard to put on without damaging the paint on the wheel.
Any thoughts?
I did see the suggestion re: removal - Weave a rag or rope through some openings and pull.

Don't believe these were ever used on a 'S' of any vintage. I believe all 'S' used the Baby Moon style hubcaps.

Re: Square Hole Hub Caps
As far as I know those hubcaps are only for early minis 1959 to later 1960. I can confirm they will damage the paint of the wheels if taken out with a screw driver. The safest way is to use a piece of cloth

Re: Square Hole Hub Caps
How to easily get them on?
I used rubber mallet. Really chews up the paint. Must be an easier way?

Re: Square Hole Hub Caps
As above, they were only used on the 1959 deluxe models.
They are not right for an S. Unless you're not aiming for originality and just like them I would sell them as they should make good money.

Re: Square Hole Hub Caps
A Mk1 S would have LP882 / 21A1282 cream coloured 3.5”x10” wheels as factory standard, or LP883 / 21A1286 cream coloured 4.5”x10” as option. Both wheels use a 88G337 “baby moon” chrome hubcap.
The current repro hubcaps available from MiniSport and minispares are a good match to the originals. I have them on my ‘67 S.

Re: Square Hole Hub Caps
Thanks
Now I have to set a price for the square hole hub caps. Mine are chrome (magnet sticks). I have a few people interested.
Also have a lead on original baby moon hub caps. Anyway to tell original from reproductions?

Re: Square Hole Hub Caps
Square hole hubcaps were Austins for a short while and half moons were Morris, standardised to half moons after a year or so and certainly by 1961.
Half moons clipped over the wheel hub and the square hole ones pressed into the wheel rim, scratching the paint and causing rust.

Re: Square Hole Hub Caps
Thanks all for comments.
Were originals chrome or stainless steel?
I have received feedback for both! Who is correct?
