Droopy door handles

Post by Nick W »

Well I've read about shimming these , and twisting them .
But to be honest the best repair is replace the mechanism, as this is the part that wears and they can still be bought nos for around £20...for now.
Here are some before and after fitting videos

I don't know if any are being made but have seen quite a few for this money in UK

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/274533344379

I think they could be refurbished putting new parts in them, using original casings..which there are loads of

The other option, off the top of my head without looking inside one of the casing, would be a suitable torsion spring to support the weight of the handle. Would probably help with rattle whilst driving as well...

I'll add it my ever growing list of things to look at...

July’s MCR CooperWorld magazine Technical Topics series by Richard Pengelly, also explains a method on how to fix your droopy Mk1/2 door handles. I will try to find my copy, scan and post it here later.

I just cut up some old ball joint shims and wedged then into the lock when sliding the handle in. Once tightened with a the self tapping screw seem to tighten the handle in full. Was not keen on twisting the door handle

Make sure you’re on “ Minisport.com.au” and search for HYA3512. ($A14.95)

Also worth noting that after fitting the new latch, the door shut at the rear pulled in fractionally, so as the latch wears, it causes the door to stick out more than when new.

Part number HYA3512, they were used in Australian wind-up window doors. In my youth I made them from piano wire.

Just a hint... they are snail springs and I found that you need to wind them up a bit to provide enough preload to hold the handles up.... Not too far or they'll bind when you push the handle down...
