Looks like a 998 Cooper engine...
I have what looks to be a 998 Cooper short block. D top pistons, two rings between 1/2 lobes. Anyone with more experience able to shed some light or help me confirm if it is a Cooper 998?

If I had to guess I would say it is a 998 Cooper engine, but block is same as any other 998 from same era as far as I know, pistons are defo cooper, engine number is best giveaway

D tops were only used in 998 Coopers as Daz says.

I think it is a cooper engine as it also has no fuel pump hole which I believe was only the cooper too? Might be wrong

Thanks everyone for the info. I think it’s pretty safe to assume this is a 998 Cooper engine. Not that I’ll be using it for my project, this will hopefully get passed on to someone else who is restoring a 998 Cooper.

The Innocenti Mini 1001 (and probably the earlier Innocenti Coopers) had D-top pistons and 12G295 heads too.

OK it seems we all think of this as a 998 Cooper unit. Of course the D crown pistons are a dead give away. I have a 73 Inno
1001 Cooper. It came to me as a failed Honda conversion missing the power unit and front end, I recently located a 998 Cooper
short block with a spun rod bearing. I have 295 cyl heads, cranks and intake kits. Fellow is asking dollars 350 US and I think it is a fair
deal. I'd like to be able to hone and fit rings to retain the D crowns. Failing that I'll bore and fit press fit flat tops. What value
would we place on a a properly rebuilt 998 Cooper unit? I do not have a title for the Inno and may consider parting it out
completely. I also have a complete 997 project with very , very rough shell. While I do have the title this one may get parted
out as well. Steve (CTR)
