I'm getting the squeaky squeaky so a new water pump looms.
Thinking of an electric one rather than the conventional. Anyone fitted one? Type? Good points. Bad points. Pitfalls. Easy to fit? What's needed to fit etc etc.
I'm thinking along these lines at the moment too, if you take away the water pump but still have the alternator is it really worth it? does the alternator not pull much power?

I actually have one of those pumps which I was going to fit into an Imp based car but decided not to bother.
Really I'm basically looking at reliability. Is it more reliable than the standard jobbie? Certainly would help with the cooling once the engine is switched off. Not bothered about the extra 2BHP.
You'll need to fabricate a blanking plate with the bottom hose outlet on it, when I was considering this. I looked at Renault (sencic & 19) and vauxhall pumps. As these would/should be more readily available, if it packs up in some backwater.
Are you using a side mounted rad as per normal or a front mounted rad.?
If you're using a standard rad set up there will not be much room to route the hoses. Most if not all of the Migs and Se7ens use an electric pump, but their rads are normally front mounted.
Next time I visit my mates place I'll try and take a pic of the set up on one of his cars if it helps.
Managed ro get a few pics of an electric pump setup.
As I thought, there is no room if using a normally mounted rad and if you do away with the standard pump what fan system will you be using.?
Anyways, my mate only uses Davies Craig pumps and they are very reliable, (until next time he goes racing and the pump goes pop. )
Cooling system on his Se7en. The pump is connected inline to the bottom hose.
Thanks for that Dai. Looks complicated enough with a front rad never mind a side one. Might shelve the electric pump meantime & think on it for a future (Winter?) project.
