mastic for a woody

Post by woodypup59 »

I've removed the wood from my Woody, for some rust repairs.

I've forgotten what mastic / putty I used 25 years ago but it might have been linseed oil based putty.

What do folks use nowadays. Is there anything gun-able ?

I see Screwfix have a silicon sealents in several beige colours which would be a good match for the wood.

Or would a clear one be better ?

Can’t speak from experience on woody stuff but the normal silicon sealers don’t seam to last externally. Last time I used that sort of thing was on a Land Rover and I went for a builders mastic.

I think the preferred product is 1/4" foam weather proofing tape. That's what came with the wood for my Traveller I got from Somerford.

I used this for my last woody restauration. It stays soft and sticky for many years and give a good seal.

The mastic who is too much you can easy mop up.

I use the same to seal windscreens and sliding window channels and they are absolutely waterproof

Somerford list the tape for sealing the wood. Maybe a bit less messy that squirting sealant everywhere.
