sound deadening
I know you cant see it when the cars all built up, but I hate to see modern looking sound deadening. This stuff seems about the best I can find....any one found any thing else that looks old??.

Re: sound deadening
I know what you're saying NIck but........... Be wary about using the old stuff* that you show because it absorbs atmospheric moisture like it's going out of fashion and as it does so, it's out of sight and out of mind. The modern stuff has by far, far superior sound absorbent and deadening qualities and ain't absorbent
* I think that it's called compressed cotton waste

this stuff is called Needle loom felt....yes I see your point, I think its one of those things that after Ive spent months rebuilding a car, Im unlikely to let moisture get in to my car to any degree...look at door cards ..made of compressed card board, and we have all seen what moisture can do to them. but Ive never had an issue with this on any of my cars, as I dont use them like they would have been used back in the day. if a car does get used like say a modern car, left out in the winter, used in any condition like( Rich's) cars, then it will rot no matter what you do to stop it. so for me I prefer to use original materials even if its not as technically good as the modern equivalent.

Re: sound deadening
Very nice by the looks.
I get what you are saying Peter but if the car isn’t going to get wet or be exposed then the felt deadening should be fine. I have similar in the FY ‘S’ and all is well some 13 years after fitting up. I’m

I Suppose it could do the boot but if you find some original ..I would use it for the real authentic look.Hipwell wrote:Does look a close match.
Does this also lie inside the boot?
sheds quite a bit of fibres that can be anoying but you can stop this if you use some hair spray laquer on it I think..

With the black painted battery well too.
Is the felt glued into place or just laid?
Where else do you have insulation? Under the rear parcel shelf, rear seat, rear wheel arches? I've got to do this myself one day so I am interested to find out all the places that should have the jute felt insulation.

Behind the dash panels and roof skin
Thinner, similar felt on the door skins and rear quarter panels.

Re: sound deadening
Looked at the website...they have a 1/4" felt that might be ideal for the doors and rear quarter panels....
the rear parcel shelf has a really thick piece ...approx. 1" thick....think a double thickness of their 1/2: would be ideal.
Anyone looked at their wool carpet.....wonder how it compares to Martrim etc!!

No, haven't decided yet on which to use on my 970 and the 1071......have a lot of samples that look quite good.
Still waiting to hear if the dark gray Veltone (BAS) will ever happen. Talked to Rebecca last week....not much happening on the development of this color. Said they are so busy...don't have the staff/time to focus on it!

Hi, I am away at the moment but can check the car when I get back next week. BTW is the black original then? I did wonder as the car is virtually untouched as far as I'm aware?NZmember wrote:With the black painted battery well too.

Re: sound deadening
Andy,
Can you tell us the thickness of your original boot insulation. I'm guessing it is 1/2 ".
It looks like the Needlefelt 1/2" would be a very close equivalent to the factory original.

Re: sound deadening
Slightly off topic but does the insulation in the boot and on the parcel shelf actually make much of an impact on cabin noise?

Yes...but the biggest difference I found with sound deadening was the under bonnet and bulkhead area.johnv wrote:Slightly off topic but does the insulation in the boot and on the parcel shelf actually make much of an impact on cabin noise?

Re: sound deadening
Apologise to ask in this thread
.. but has anyone used these modern self sticking sound reduction pads on the cannot be seen areas such as the the inside back of Bulkhead & behind Door Cards etc .. have seen it used on a mk1 Golf & the noise reduction was significant & this modern stuff does not absorb moisture.
