That old bone rattler..., Bristol Freighters........ Yes! We had them as general freighters and troop transports in the Far East in the 60's. We used to call them Bristol Frighteners. I seem to recall that it was the NZ Air Force that had the bulk of them. The RAF had a similar frightener, RAF Belvederes, a sort of prehistoric Chinook. When they took the crunchies on operations they had to take their own fuel with them for the return flight. Not a lot of fun seeing 6x 44 gallon drums of petrol strapped in alongside you!!!!!!!

I used to watch Bristol Freighters take off several times a day in Wellington NZ in the early '70s. Noisy buggers. Recently one in quite good nick was dismantled and shipped from NZ to the UK for restoration to flying condition..

Lasted quite well then considering! A Nice Mk3 1000 would be sought after now....

At first I thought that was the one pictured outside Lord John, but plate says different. White must have been a favourite on the test fleet.

I love Rostyles. Such a shame they didn’t continue them for 12” instead of the ghastly Denovos.
