Re: Just a nice period picture
That old bone rattler..., Bristol Freighters........ Yes! We had them as general freighters and troop transports in the Far East in the 60's. We used to call them Bristol Frighteners. I seem to recall that it was the NZ Air Force that had the bulk of them. The RAF had a similar frightener, RAF Belvederes, a sort of prehistoric Chinook. When they took the crunchies on operations they had to take their own fuel with them for the return flight. Not a lot of fun seeing 6x 44 gallon drums of petrol strapped in alongside you!!!!!!!

Re: Just a nice period picture
I used to watch Bristol Freighters take off several times a day in Wellington NZ in the early '70s. Noisy buggers. Recently one in quite good nick was dismantled and shipped from NZ to the UK for restoration to flying condition..

Re: Just a nice period picture
thats the one.. went in one on a trip to Heathrow once when my Dad was on biz looking after the Aviation Fuel contracts for Shell there back in the 60,s.....the A T L 98 Carvair sorta superceeded car transports by air later in the decade..it was a converted Douglas DC 4 OR 6 ?!!.. SO LONG AGO I HAVE FORGOTTEN !!!..lol....ps I think Dan Dare (Air)...lol...used them as commercial freighters to.... foxy52Peter Laidler wrote:That old bone rattler..., Bristol Freighters........ Re: Just a nice period picture
At first I thought that was the one pictured outside Lord John, but plate says different. White must have been a favourite on the test fleet.WMU 211G wrote:From the February '73 issue of 'Motorsport' mag...

I love Rostyles. Such a shame they didn’t continue them for 12” instead of the ghastly Denovos.surfblue63 wrote:At first I thought that was the one pictured outside Lord John, but plate says different. White must have been a favourite on the test fleet.
