Tweed does look well with Tartan red vinyl! Might have to rethink the Grey / Gold brocade and hang out for Red / Gold instead!!

leaving the boot board brackets in the 'as delivered' black paint finish is a nice touch that most serious restorers miss....
the 'elf' trim looks nice though, my black and gold heap had that fitted originally

I usually steer clear of discussions of value but the rocker cover on the red car referred to above is NOT an HRG one, the one in the link above is, but the one on the car is different, this was available from a huge array of suppliers throughout the 80's & 90's, only being superseded by the type that is currently offered by MS. Nice car! Sounds like a fantastic history too.
Is there any paperwork surviving for the Downton mods?
It is implied in the description that Downton did the 1974 mods including the body work & suspension, is this the case? Did they fit a head as well as the carbs & cam?
It's a shame that it hasn't retained it's grey paint job though.
I would certainly be interested to hear any more of the story you can share.

I didn't even notice the number of fins but I was sure I found an image that matched it perfectly a while back that claimed to be HRG
During 1975, the previous owner's son restored the car and upgraded its performance, so that cover has been there since at least that year.

I have to concur that some of the details have deviated somewhat beyond the history document I provided. I guess I don't posses that auctioneer flare..
I can assure you that the factual elements of the history are true, this is not a car that has been rolled in a ditch or welded together from umpteen shells though.
This was my father's pride and joy and it is regrettable that, primarily due to his wife's arthritis, he was unable to enjoy it as much as he would've liked before its condition deteriorated
With his health failing post restoration, he was robbed of both his retirement and the fun he would've had with this vehicle during his retirement.
My mother and I have never driven it and apart from it going a mile or so to our local MoT station (before it was SORNd) [driven by an experienced 'older' friend of mine ] it has remained garaged.
Part of me doesn't want to sell it, some say it's no accident I've auctioned it during a day with both football and the Royal Wedding being on the calendar but it's been 9 years since my father died (and 5 since my mother died) and it needs to go somewhere that will cherish it and use it, rather than it being stuck in my garage.
Thanks for the positive comments, although I did mess up on the rocker cover (I'm no mini expert I'm afraid) I should add that the sales catalogue does correctly state an alloy rocker cover (not HRG).

That is a nice story / history, but in my opinion, as in many cases, the full restoration has taken away any originality that the car may have had

He clearly wasn't bothered about the monetary side of owning it else the car would've been sprayed surf blue, but it does retain all of the important performance upgrades (engine/suspension etc) and fixtures.
I'm not sure anybody is going to find a pristine original car unless it's been sealed in an air tight container for 50 years. The availability of old parts from certain auction sites makes it too easy to 'create' an original car, so even if you did see one, chances are it isn't. Its originality was of course affected after being sent straight off to Radfords to be de-seamed in 1964, so considering this fact, no amount of 'work' or purchasing of old parts would've helped here
On the plus side, this car has never been anywhere near any well known 'restorers' that seem to create cars from only their paperwork.
I think the estimate is reasonable, considering some of the prices I have seen of late, but who's to say what something is worth if two or more people want it.
