Hi Robert,
Yes, the gold plating you found is likely to be the result of parts being replated me thinks. I have been told there were some replacement Lockheed servos made some years after Mk1/2 production that had gold coloured zing plating.

Maybe cos its the "MK1 Forum" :lol:

I assume from your questioning this, that it isn't.

If its the later MK3 6" servo then there is a strong possibility that it was originally Gold passivated zinc originally.

BTW, MK1's 2's & 3's are all welcome here.

well!! i was wrong , its a mk 1 !! :D

the chap restoring it ,actually bought a new 1965 mk 1 cooper s and it had a gold servo , he also worked with ap at bl .

so ,blimey ,does this mean everyone with a silver servo on the super duper cooper s's have the wrong colour ooof shock horror !!! :o :o ;)

The Bright Clear Passivated Zinc and Gold Passivated Zinc are the same process, I think just left in for longer. You can also get Olive Green Zinc (looks like military spec). -The 'darker' the colour, the greater the corrosion protection.
I used to work for Lockheed /AP. It was common to change between Bright Clear and Gold, as customers (the car makers) wanted to improve protection, then save costs by reducing it, then increase it again...... So it's probable that they very both used at the same time!
