i have a friend restoring a 1275 s ,and he is trying to find somewhere to plate the servo in that tumbled gold finish ,he told me what its called ,but stuffed if i can remember ,zinc something or other .
does anyone know where he might get it done ?
I dont think (neck out here) that gold cad is correct for an Mk1/2 - gold superceded the silver finish late 60s / early 70s? and all un-restored servo's i have seen have the silver cad finish.
The difficultly is getting in replicated, the process is outlawed here bar for aerospace applications, it can be done in the US but i believe the best bet in absence of alternatives is a dull zinc.
My plater refers to zinc plating as gold zinc or blue zinc and he does both. Blue zinc goes white as it oxidizes and looks very much like cadmium. In my opinion, gold zinc is wrong for a Mk1, too modern and Japanese looking.
thanks chaps ,i passed on the details ,and he'll see whats what .incidentally , the original servo drum , when split into two ,is gold zinc on the inside .
sounds like he might be in trouble will , al ,who are your platers ?
one suggestion was that he ask the brake caliper recon companies , because they seem to come back with a new coating of gold zinc ?
Gold or silver passivated zinc are available from any electroplating company in the country. For a very authentic looking Cad type finish you can get a kit from here;
They also offer a range of other excellent plating kits & accessories. Not cheap, but if you are doing quite a bit its easy & you soon get your costs back.
I agree that most if not all MK1 S's left the factory with a Cadmium plated servo reservoir not a gold passivated zinc one, although as usual I accept that most things are possible.
Thanks, Mark. I was starting to doubt my memory. I've been around a lot of original, Mk I Cooper S cars (English built) over the years and have never seen one with an originally fitted gold servo.
