Pinion gear woes

Post by Toby »

Gentle people,

Has anybody else run into the issue that during assembly the pinion gear just won't go on the shaft? Both are new old stock pre A plus items, but it looks like they have been machined in such a way that the fit is too tight. And I don't want to put the pinion on the shaft using a press.

Have you got an old Pinion and Shaft? Just to try each on something else to see where the issue might be.

I've had a few new A+ Mainshafts that have had a bur on them, once cleaned up, they come together OK.

They are a very neat fit.

I've tried to fit the pinion to two other shafts too, both of them are new. I did check for burs on both, yet nothing. Think I might need to source a different pinion gear to use, but first of all try with a used one to see if that goes on.

don't press or hammer the pinion on, or you will regret it later!

best method is to use a small oil stone and just remove any edges and then use an old pinion to get a 'best fit' then use the new pinion.

it should be a nice sliding fit
should you wish, you can contact me on rich@minispares.com

The Pinions seat on the smaller diameter and so are easily measured. I have a drawing for the Pinions in the office, I'll check (if I remember!) tomorrow (our time) and let you know what the mounting diameter and spline sizing is, so you can check for yourself.

The Shafts are harder to check.
