Think I've got that book somewhere.
Bought some 40s earlier this week for the Speedwell 7 port, this seemed like a good thread to add some quick mockup photos, its a bog old unit with the carbs on...

Whoever restored that Speedwell 7 port looks to have done a beautiful job

They were originally made for 4 semi downdraught AMALS, but have been modified for 40's.
Not the tidiest job ever, but functional.

May I ask which book this is? The cutaways look really nice!

I'm guessing with that set up there's definitely going to have to be a few bulkhead tweaks needed on a Mini

Would def make in-car setting up of the carbs dead easy from the passenger seat
At some point I'm gunna see if Maniflow can make another pair of manifolds.

The book is "The Design and Tuning of Competition Engines" by Philip H. Smith. There are about 5 editions from 1954 to 1971 as far as I know. I have a 1974 printing of the 5th edition so there may be more. Published by Robert Bentley.
My copy has the same pictures on the same pages as the original post.

Is it possible to post a shot or 2 of the rest of the Speedwell 7 port, in particular to the inlet ports on the head, are these two thin oval shapes with a very thin strip of metal between each one? Similar to the Manx 7 port but with the separation of the inlets in the head and not the manifold?
I believe that the head was originally run in an A40?

You are right on all counts, 4 long thin inlets. the head was originally designed for use on an A40.

Excellent thanks, I don't think that they made many of them, probably just a handful? good that there are 2 together! I believe that Roger Bunting used to race an A40 with one of those fitted?
Not sure how well they worked?
