I screw this up all the time may have something to do with birthdays. I even drew a picture on my work bench and got that wrong. That's the reason I recheck after installing the key. Off the top of my head without the aid of my corrected picture at work you was to advance the cam so install to rotate the cam clockwise. If using a timing chain consider installing a 3 or 4 degree key as chain stretch will retard it in short order. Steve (CTR)

surely, if my calculations add up to 112, and the cam is 110, i need to retard it?

If you are referring to - have inlet: opening 112 after and need: opening 110 after, then you need to advance the cam.

So actually we are in agreement. :)
