Clutch diaphragm centering

Post by Benny »

I installed my flywheel assembly to my engine last night. My flywheel bolt is the type with the 'nipple' in the center, so it makes a good, visual reference point for the center of the assembly. As I fitted the diaphragm for a "dry run", I noticed it appeared very off-center when looking through the release bearing thrust plate to the bolt nipple.

I loosened the 6 bolts, and pushed the diaphragm to a more centered position as I re-tightened the bolts, and I was able to alter its final resting position by quite a bit. I repeated this several times, and I felt there wasn't much consistency as to where the diaphragm ended up. The technique that seemed to get the most centered (and consistent) results was to sort of twist the diaphragm clockwise to put the drive straps in tension as I tightened the bolts....this seemed to get it centered quite well each time.

I'm struggling with what I'm seeing here. The drive straps are new, they fit tightly over the special shouldered bolts, and the shouldered bolts fit tightly into the diaphragm. However, I feel like there is some slack in the system that allows me to achieve multiple different with the diaphragm.

Has anyone else struggled with this, and if so, is there a fix? I even experimented with sleeved dowels threaded into the flywheel to pick-up on the larger holes in the diaphragm, but I wasn't totally confident in those results either.
