Cooked coil!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can somebody please help me I am desperately trying to finish my 997 for its mot! I've had major problems with electrics , I am certainly no electrician , the old loom was 51 years old so was having a lot of issues with things working then not working , so I've changed it for a new braided one , everything is nearly all working now . Apart from the coil is now playing up I think , I had the ignition on for quite a while without starting the engine , tried to start it but no joy , the coil felt hot and I don't think it is now working there is power getting to the coil because when I removed the white and black wire with the ignition on there was a spark. I have no idea what so ever if this is connected . Also it is positive earth so I'm not sure if the white and black wire goes to the + or - on the coil . This has been a long expensive effort !!, but well worth it , I just need a little help to reach the light!!!!!, kind regards mark

For a positive earth vehicle, the power lead to the coil goes to the - (neg) & the wire to the distributor goes to the + (pos). It's not unusual for coils to get hot if the ignition is on without the engine running. It may not be damaged.

also be 100 % sure your coil is not for elec ignition
If you burn out the coil it might be that youve fried the condensor as well

High thanks for your replies , the coil was fine in the end, the reason it would not start was the points had come loose so the contact breaker was not opening !! It's running beautiful now , almost there now a few things to put back together then it's ready for its first mot in about 30 years!! Kind regards mark

Glad to hear you got your problem sorted & that it was a minor one!

So easy to go off on the wrong track when fault finding, that's why it is always good to have a set schedule.
