Speedometer ID?

Post by mr.lotus »

I have what appears to be a, 1963 Austin Cooper. The speedometer has a plain black face, no inner white rings. Reads in MPH to 120 MPH. The face has the shift points at 33/55/78. Only the H/B and IGN warning lamps. Writing on face reads; RPM 1312 (below odometer). 54M2-1/12. It is a Smiths speedometer. Any ideas what the speedometer is or, what is out of? I have the Parnell book, nothing like it. Could the speedometer be out of another car? Perhaps a "replacement speedometer", Morris Minor? Thanks for the help. mr.lotus

No SN number ? The 1312 RPM does not seem familiar, I would expect 1376, 1408 or maybe 1280 on an early speedo, although 1312 could represent an alternative diff ratio. I am guessing it's 5 inches in diameter, has a pointed bezel and a convex glass face ? Morris Minors were either 80 or 90 MPH, in fact black faced ones were always 90. The mounting for the 2 screws was slightly different from Mini ones.
The ADO16 1300GT had a120 MPH but it was smaller in diameter than a Mini unit. A photo would be a great help.

Sounds like it is an Aussie unit then.

1312rpm is an unusual one. I did find a 1312rpm in my bit of Smiths catalogue. Apparently it was from a Cooper S Mk 2 1275cc Police Std. Axle and gearbox. The SN code for this unit was SN4421/48.
The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who do not possess it.

When Nick and Simon "speak" one listens!

A photo will help.

I can confirm SN4421/48, 1312 as a Mk II S police car, 3.44 final drive. OKD697F has that speedo. It is marked with numbers to 130 mph (no hash marks beyond 130) and there are no smaller kph markings.

Thanks to, "cooper's 65" for sending the link to Australian made Mini's. The speedometer is an, Australian MK2 Cooper, not sure if it is the "S" or just a Cooper. Perhaps the Australian cars used a different speedometer gear set up? Is the speedometer worth repairing and putting back into service? English Mini with Australian speedometer, in Arizona USA. What else will show up in this car? mr.lotus

I wouldn't listen to Nick, he obviously doesn't know what he's talking about.

Australia didn't do Mk2 Coopers, just S types.

Sort of. Australian Mini production doesn't fit UK Mk numbers, for example all of our Mini sedans had the small rear window right until the end. However we did have a Cooper S model that was known locally as Mk2, between 1969 and 1971.

Sorry KA2S4, I see what you meant now  .
Yes, Australia only had Mk1 Cooper 997s and 998s, but we had Mk1 and Mk2 Coooper S 1275s.

I removed the speedometer from the car today, to send out for repair. I know it is not the "correct" speedometer for a, "1963" Cooper (not an S). It is an interesting speedometer. Unless there is the, "correct" Cooper speedometer out there that, is willing to trade? Could be an interesting conversation piece, when in the car. Thanks for the all response.
