head gasket

when should i retorque the head after fitting a new head gasket?
i,ve heard anything from 10 minutes to 500 miles.

It doesn't matter how long you drive. I'ts the number of heatcycles that's important. 3-4 heatcycles and you should be OK.

and i presume it,s done when then engine is cold.
