Now I'm not that tight and I do like the Hammerite range of stuff but what in the hell can I use as an alternative to wash my brushes in? Their brush cleaner is a total rip-off. Anyone agree?

Use ordinary celulose thinners. 
I used to use their over priced thinners and then found by chance that ordinary thinners works.

Quite agree. Normal "gunwash" thinner works fine for cleaning. The only time I found their own thinner was an advantage was when spraying the hammer finish paint .
