POR15 paint - all gone wrong !!
just spent all week stripping my subframe, thought id give por15 a try - subframes been sanded and throughly cleaned off with brake cleaner.
Used the prep ready liquid , did exactly as it says, rinsed it off with water, wiped it down, blew it off with airline , wiped again with brake cleaner
Painted with POR15
looked nice and then WHAM fisheyes all over, its now just a sticky mess that looks like ive painted over paint stripper
anyone else used it ??

Fisheyes indicate grease on the surface. I would suspect the brake cleaner.
On a related note, whenever I paint something, I mix in a bit of "fish eye eliminator", for example

or
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fish-Eye-Elimin ... a1&vxp=mtr
It is really amazing what this stuff does. I have seen demonstrations where they will paint directly on top of an oiled piece of metal, WD40 and silicone spray lube.

I've used it a few times and have never had trouble, sounds like the prep process to me also.

Re: POR15 paint - all gone wrong !!
brake cleaner is industrial trichoethylene - we have a special clean room we use for painting other stuff at work so im pretty clued up on how prep should be done - silicones etc are not allowed in the place so im 100% positive its not contamination from grease or anything, certainly not on the scale of the problem
painted something else last night thats just been sanded down to metal , no prep so lets what happens
me - valet a car , lol dont be silly

Do you think the fish eye eliminator could do anything for this guy?

If you were that clued up you would'nt be using brake cleaner to prep for paint

I have also noticed POR-15 is very susceptible to fish eyes., its weird stuff, a bit like powder coat when dry.
Maybe its very sensitive to static electricity or sommit....
In the end i decided it looks too plastic for a sympathetic resto...

Re: POR15 paint - all gone wrong !!
You can't put more paint on a fish eye and expect it to cover...........If applied correctly the finish is matt, and perfect for spraying onto.

And would you like to explain to my why 1,1,1-trichloroethane (Proper brake cleaner) is not suitable as a degreaser
This is going to be interesting

Re: POR15 paint - all gone wrong !!
Will work perfectly well as a cleaner, but i'd expect the problem to be something to do with the chlorine in it.

Are you sure it is 1,1,1-Trichloroethane? It has been banned in the UK since 1998. You're allowed to use up old stock, but you shouldn't have been able to buy it since then.

Re: POR15 paint - all gone wrong !!
banned no - phased out yes and im pretty sure it is what it says it is on the tin
we also use methylenedichloride, tetrahydrafuran and all kinds of crap- all supposedly banned but you can still buy them all from the right places if youre an industrial user of sorts
any way - still waiting to find out why trich isnt a suitable degreaser ??

So am I, For many years I've been using brake cleaner for final cleaning of components before painting, & never had fish eyes on cellulose, smooth hammerite, synthetic enamel, wheel silver or engine paint. I've never tried POR15, always been happy with Hammerite. Brake cleaner was actually recommended to me to prevent getting fish eyes & I must admit some of it has come from the pound shop, but works perfectly!

Re: POR15 paint - all gone wrong !!
yea we used to bath large alloy panels in trich before painting them (oh yes i used to be a paint sprayer) , only thing you could really trust to fully degrease and clean bare ally before painting
and ive been doing it wrong for all these years
How come then ????? (still no answer coming forwards)
