Hello,
Does anybody have any photos of what original HT leads were like on early mk1-3 mini's? Or possibly period type leads? 60's70's
Also, What plug caps were used etc? And was it that black and yellow bumble bee type lead or was that race spec?

Black and yellow lucas lead was mainly used on works cars, standard lead was black copper core with champion caps although they did differ from year to year as far as I know.

I believe the caps shown on the Mk2 above are incorrect. This style ran from around '63 and ceased in early '65. The type I have attached were used '65, 66 and '67, and then replaced by the smaller plastic type (WC200). I have not fully researched the above but I don't think I'm far away.

The top one is a later plastic type used on mk 3s, the lower one would be correct. The early black lead had no writing on it, this is more an 80s on thing.
The other champion cap used had a raisd spot in the middle and no insignia, again for the mk 1 era.

...the top one is exactly the same as i have on my mk 2s.. outer white colour and black champion lettering as per the engine bay of the white car... though i think over the years they chopped and changed with white on black and black on white so to speak.. ??!!

I agree with 66S I do not believe that WCX600's were standard fitment on a Mini & the small rubber WCX200's with dark green leads were a 70's style.



These caps with plain black leads look about right to me.

My dads old frog eye just used to have bits of copper screwed on! Was great fun going out in that and pulling up next to people at traffic lights and watching them messing with their radios! Haha!

I've got some NOS green leads that have Ripaults and Lucas on them. The time line that seems to be evident is black (copper cored) through to '65 some time, then green, which follows through to late '67. They went back to black again then. I think the green was suppression lead (carbon) so maybe there is a change date for radio suppression somewhere.

I'm not saying this is a fact or researched, just expressing what I have found.

The other problem with the green lead would appear to be that with a HA12 coil that has an acorn fitting you cannot use a carbon core lead as the copper needs to be splayed inside the screw in acorn.

Surly if this carbon core lead was available in 65 all the more up market cars like Jags, Astons etc would also have used it !

Personaly I cant say that I had ever seen this style of lead with the writing on until the 80s, possably late 70s. Can anyone offer some kind of proof that this was available from 1965.

Ive got similar styled NGK caps.
Where sell lengths of the appropriate lead so that I can make replacements?

I reckon the type you need are the "bowtie" type, shown in the second pic on the first page of this post. I am not sure about the white though, I think the word "Champion" should be filled in white and the background bowtie black.

Where can you buy lengths of HT lead from to make up new ones (to keep original caps)?

These guy's have most options except green copper core.
