Fitting Seat Covers (request)

I am doing my 59 mini and 62 Cooper.

My Cooper came with covers someone else has done (quite well but not original) My 59 came with seats but not covers so I cant see how they were fitted.

I have complete newtons kits for both but want to put them on right. Has anyone got some photos while they were fitting theres?

The rear ones are ofcoarse simple its more the front base and squab with the little flaps that push into the bottom / rear area.

Steve, here are some before and after photos from when I re-covered my seats. The seats were as they were from the factory before I stripped them down, so it will give you some guidance on how to redo yours to the original spec. Note, the seat back on mine had "pirelli" straps instead of the wire mesh diaphram...I hadn't seen this before. When I installed the new diaphram, I ended up using one of the pirelli straps to give my back a little more support.

I basically just made sure the piping was centred and straight and then pulled the cover tight and used the little clips around the edge of the metal frame. It will be fairly obvious. When you pull the cover over the seat back, the tabs at the bottom (with the metal inserts) will fall naturally in a place where you can just wrap them under the seat frame to hold it in place.

The smaller blue foam has to be stuffed into the seat cover first before you fix the cover on the seat frame

Is there anything you guys would have done different to add more support to the seats, like adding more foam or doubling the springs?

No, I used the stuff delivered by Newton and it works very well. No extra springs or foam needed even the Newton stuff is different to the original latex Vitafoam. I can only hope it will last as long as the vitafoam did.......

Stefan; where did you get that cream strapping from? I think it's called Pirelli webbing...

I GOOGLE'd "Pirelli webbing straps", and a ton of suppliers came up.

The straps are from Newton. They are seperately available asfar as I know and are cut in the right lengths.

Is there a special purpose for going this the strasps over the new metal spring diaphram?

Yes, early seat frames.

The reason way I ask, is because my 62" MK1 Morris Mini Minor seats had the straps, but when recovering I put the spring type diaphram, which fit in the same holes along the sides.

The diaphram has more tension, so you sit more upright, it's very springy and comfortable. The straps had less tension and hardly any spring/strech, so you sit back more into the seat.

I actually wish I kept the old straps on, so I can take advantage of the sides of the seats holding me in, when going around sharp corners. But every body I talk to says give it time the springs will loose some tension.
