Hello there,

For my next project I plane to use a SPQR gear shift. Before to modif the bodyshell I would like to be sure this item is also drivable than a remote change gear box or not ?
I want to fir one because I found this accessorie really beautifull without the plastic cover.

Thank you in advance for your help.

If you have a wavy wand gearchange the SPQR is quite a good alternative, I had one in my 62 van and never had any trouble with it, I liked it.

nothing wrong with wand change,,

i had an spqr in one,and change is good but without the proper console for it,,neutral "gate" is a bit odd to say the least and the gear throws, although smooth are very very long
..

worth a try but the bodyshell has to be cut for fitment dont forget... :|

If the unit is in good condition without too much slop in the joints its pretty good, but as has already been said its probably no better than the standard magic wand in good condition.

An interesting period mod, but maybe not a sensible one, particularly when you have to cut 2 big holes in the floor.

Thank you for your feedback !

I plane to use a gearbox like this (Thanks ChrisB for the pics ;) ) with a 1293 engine.

Like this if it doesn't work I could change with out too much modification on the gearbox.

The SPQR won't fit a gearbox like that, that's a pudding stirrer remote box as used in commercials and Mokes. The SPQR will only fit the early 850 magic wand.

You'd get a far superior gear change by fitting the correct gearchange extension and making it into a proper remote.

That's actually the magic wand fitted to late 4 synchro boxes as fitted to 850's as well as commercials etc. The wand itself is different from the early one as it has the groove on top instead of in the side. That setup is quite good and of course you can fit a big engine without problems because the box is 4 syn. The main problem being that you don't get the extra stability provided by a remote so the engine will probably go through steady bar bushes unless you fit some kind of ultimate steady.

Hi there,

The following Japanese blog I've came across may help.
It got 3 pages all about SPQR products, and showed how the 850 floor is cut to fit the gearchange.
The 3rd page also talk about the engine stabilizer which Rolesyboy interested in.
As for translation, may need help from our Japanese members here.
I also have a set of this gearchange plus console, but always hold back from fitting it by cut the floor!
Enjoy:
