Workshop overhead costs in2025

Post by hanlminiman »

Has anyone thought how much a machine shop has to pay to keep their engineering machines' measurements totally accurate by keeping the temperatures in line? Just asking?

Hani..back in the day there was never any consideration with the Temperatures in the Machine Shop ..we just needed to remember to account for the machines often excessive Backlash (Wear) ) in that Cowley Machine Shop .. this situation was just accepted given "All those Machines were older than me Grandad."

Todays World ..yes important issue when working to a 5 micron tolerance when Machining Carbon.
so to answer your question, given the company can afford multiples of these very high cost to buy & install 5Axis Machines, maintaining the Room & M/c Temps cost is peanuts in comparison.

Dunno if the same apply at Southam ..251Eng will ask Colin to Shut That Door 8-)

Ed Pink Racing Engines, where I have been for the last 15 months, the whole building is climate controlled.
Machine Shop, Inspection Shop, Assembly Room, Quality Control, even the offices are all 72°. Most of the time it was in the 90s outside.
The Dyno cells differ depending on application.
Energy prices in the US are a 5th of what they are here, as they are self sufficient, and don't believe in net zero bollocks.

While not a auto machine shop, I had 5500 sq ft before Covid. During Covid my shop rent doubled requiring my reduction to 3300 sq ft at a greater cost. Having spent 25 years in the auto machine shop biz retiring 25 years ago, I'm finding it hard to accept the new prices charged as well as turn around time. The market for classic mini only work isn't what it once was. At age 75 I'm considering hanging it up. I have been dipping into my savings to keep doors open. This coming monday I'm beginning efforts to improve my health. I'm not crazy about doctors or anyone with a sharp knife. Outcome will determine the future of my shop. A 12 week recovery will be be more than I can cover. Steve (CTR)
