Following on from discussions on another forum...

Did all 1071 engines used the flat fronted (so called?) Formula Junior blocks? Were they all like this or was there a changeover date (number) where the "sculpted" type casting came into use?

Parnell seems conspicuously quiet on this issue.

The first 1400 - 1600 blocks were the FJ / flat front type , change point in car production is appropriately December 63 to February 64 .

By mid 1965 the AEG 151 blocks had been used up , BMC were supplying cut down AEG 312 casting for 970 / 1071 .

This continued into thick flange block production so a 970 / 1071 with a thick flange block is a period correct replacement.

Interesting info, the logical thing for a manufacturer to do…..take a bit of defending at a car show though…..
