Triplex windscreen stickers ?

Post by smp »

Would a MKII have a "Triplex Laminated" sticker on its windscreen straight from the factory, or were the windscreens special order only?

I would have expected a Mk2 Mini to have a toughened windscreen as standard with maybe laminated as an option/special order or standard for some export markets. Not sure what year laminated came in as standard in UK (1970's?) but like lots of car safety features it took some public safety campaigns showing the dangers to get car manufacturers to implement a change.

However go for laminated, anything that increases safety in a classic Mini is worth having..... toughened windscreens often caused terrible sometimes fatal injuries in in the past during an impact, especially when few wore seat belts. A laminated screen bulges should you be unlucky enough to impact it and keeps you within the car whereas a toughened screen lets you pass through a hole with jagged glass edges....
In everyday motoring a stone thrown up can shatter a toughened windscreen, leaving you little vision and a heater, dash, etc full of shattered glass fragments, been there done that in a Mini in the 1970's....with laminated you will just have a chip or a crack and you can continue driving and replace at leisure.

I had a brand new Mk2 and it had a toughened screen. But going through Marlborough a year or so later, it smashed and I had a laminated fitted and paid the difference. Not a triplex this time, but TYNEGLASS as I recall.

Agree with everything Mab says

The only "sticker" I've seen is when the "Zebrazone" windscreen is fitted from new. This one is from 68

The windshields are also etched with " Zebrazone" when installed.

Thank you.
Unfortunately my car has a replacement windscreen ( unknown brand). I saw another nice MKII which still had its original screen. It was a Zebrazone , so I am happy I chose the sticker I did.
