Cooper day at Surbiton May 18th
Just a quick heads up about a nice event that the Surbiton community group ‘The Community Brain’ are organising on May 18th at Cooper’s garage on Hollyfield Road to celebrate all things Mini and Cooper :

Some of my photos of the Cooper Garage Open Day in Surbiton.
A good turnout of Mini enthusiasts and local residents at todays event and only a 10 minute journey down the road for me!

Speed and Suburbia: Cooper, Brabham and Campbell in Kingston
"We regard London's suburbs as a quiet retreat from its bustling city centre where life is slower and relatively uninspired. Speed and Suburbia challenges this lazy stereotype by telling three heritage stories about motorsport and speed, originating straight out of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames.
It was Surbiton - sometimes dismissively nicknamed 'Suburbiton' - where the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally-winning Mini Cooper was designed. It was Chessington where Bernie Ecclestone chose to base the offices of his multiple World Championship-winning Brabham F1 team. And it was at the Cox Lane industrial estate where Donald Campbell's record-breaking Bluebird K7 hydroplane was tested in the deep water tanks of Siebe Gorman.
This local history includes a contribution from the British Motor Museum with their take on what modern-day revolutionary thinkers - akin to John Cooper, Jack Brabham and Donald Campbell - might gift humanity in the new era of the motor car."

Community Brain charity launches book exploring Kingston's motoring past.
The Community Brain charity has released a new book telling the stories of the local figures behind the iconic Mini Cooper and historic feats in motorsports in Speed and Suburbia: Cooper, Brabham and Campbell in Kingston.
The book launch took place at the Charles Ivey Garage, the site of the former Cooper Car Company Garage, where John Cooper designed the Mini.
The book was a collaboration between the Community Brain, students from Kingston University’s publishing department, curators of the British Motor Museum and friends of Cooper, Brabham and Campbell to tell their stories.
The Community Brain is a non-profit organisation focused on using art, local history and community-led initiatives to give places renewed importance and pride:-

What’s happens to the door on EJB, or have I completely missed seeing that damage before due to the amount of times the replica is used ?

Not sure...but I would not be surprised if it gets damaged sometimes 'in transit' and/or during loading/unloading at the various events it appears at.mk1coopers wrote: ↑Sun May 19, 2024 6:55 am What’s happens to the door on EJB, or have I completely missed seeing that damage before due to the amount of times the replica is used ?

Re: Cooper day at Surbiton May 18th
The Community Brain added 20 new photos to the album Mini Day - 18/05/24.
"Thank you to everyone who came along to Mini Day yesterday, and to all who made it possible.
We celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Mini Cooper 33 EJB winning the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally with live music from The Basement Door, a talk by Michael Cooper, tours of the old garage, a Mini Monte around the borough and more. What a way to celebrate this amazing story of design & innovation in Surbiton.
We were delighted to collaborate with British Motor Museum again to bring EJB to the old John Cooper garage in the Hollyfield Road, Surbiton where the original Mini Cooper was designed.
Big thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for their support."

Re: Cooper day at Surbiton May 18th
I was sad to miss this but just couldn’t overcome the logistics, ie where the hell to park a tow vehicle and trailer, so had to pull out. Looked a really popular event though and can’t see it happening again for a while!

Re: Cooper day at Surbiton May 18th
The local Surbiton and Kingston community have been giving some really good feedback on the day and some have been suggesting it should become an annual event..so who knows? I was surprised Kingston council even allowed the Minis on the 'Mini Monte' drive through Kingston Town centre to use the pedestrian only streets Italian Job style amongst the Saturday shoppers!
