I have a 998 with a single HS4 carb and standard air filter. Getting the plastic air filter body to seal on top of the carb is near impossible, and probably gets dislodged as the engine 'rocks back' occasionally. Should there be a seal between filter box and carb.
If you floor the accelerator, you get a throaty roar. Is this normal fora standard setup ?
Would a K&N filter be quieter ??

Yes there should be a rubber seal between the elbow on the carb and the air filter housing - part number 12A1433 - available from Minispares, Somerford, etc. That should quieten it down. A K&N will be even more noisy,
