More gasket thoughts - sealant thickness?

Post by AndyPen »

I've spent a bit of time setting up my transfer gear shimming with help from kind folks on here, and other thought has just occurred. Ideally I want to use gasket sealant to 'belt and braces' my engine, and my go to is Permatex aircraft quality. I can't find any info online as to what thickness this might (or might not) add?

Has anyone found an answer, or have any thoughts please?

I'd use RTV on the half moon seal btw, as that is what I've read works best there.

Andy if the mating faces are good and a new gasket is used there should be no need to use as the new gasket should seal. :?

I shim the idler gear 1 thou thinner, then put on a very fine smear of Kent Silica gasket, that makes up the 1 thou

I have a slight doubt about the gearbox side Ronnie, it is quite discoloured in a patchy kind of way, yet feels smooth. It is a 190 box so I'd like to use a smear of sealant to give myself the best chance of it staying oil tight.

Cheers Roland, that was my first thought too.
