998 Cooper Brake Pads (7in Discs)

Hi all,

Just a quick query to see if anyone has used the Mintex 'Classic' series pad in their 7" disc set up, it apparently uses a fairly new MX4597 compound. I was going to fit the Mintex pad available from Minispares, which uses the M1144 material, but just thought I'd see if anyone had used the alternative one, I'm looking for a pad which is going to give me a bit more 'bite' to the pedal. The brakes on Tweed are OK currently, but do feel ever so slightly marginal at times, so an upgrade of pad material is my first port of call.

I'm going to be in touch with Mintex today to discuss the different characteristics, I'll report back with my findings.

Ther EBC pads I used before overheated all the time and you hat to stand on the pedal for them to work. Mintex fitted and it was night and day difference.

Thanks for the feedback Dan, that's great to hear that you've had good results from the M1144. Having spent a very enjoyable hour or more over with Alan at Questmead talking all things Mini's and brakes yesterday afternoon, I've decided to start with the M1144 too and see how I get on. It was certainly interesting to get Alan's take on things and hear his thoughts on the M1166 material as a possible too.

Which EBC pads were you using?

The EBC black and green stuff pads are without doubt the worst pads I have ever used, they are just dead as there is no bite or feel.
The green stuff is okay for racing but until they have a lot of heat in them a block of wood is a better option, don`t believe the marketing hype.
It`s not until you use a quality pad that you realise that you can actually have decent brakes on a mini.

I used EBC green stuff years ago.
I got mugged/over excited by the marketing. They were as useful as two bits of ply for a road car.

I’ve got the ultimax pads in mine and expecting the worst I’ve found them to be ok. In that they’re acceptable and they don’t scare the life out of me and so far I’ve never felt that far isn’t going to stop in time. Are these the pads that people refer to as blackstuff? When the time to change comes I’ll look at the Mintex ones if there’s a considerable improvement.

I also drive a Morris Minor so I know what crap brakes really are

Fitted the Mintex M1144 pads and they are good with bite to them. The standard pads just sort of coasted alone until we stopped.
I am still using a 0.7 master cylinder as I want to limit the pedal travel.

Did you have to bed the pads in? Or were they fit and forget?

I’ve done about 4500 miles on mine now. Cooked them twice in the Alps and whilst they’ve been ok, they’ve not felt brilliant. Better than the naysayers would have me think mind you, but rather dead.

Yes. First off I tried bedding in up a slight hill but it took so long to get the 850 back the to 60/70 mph I got no heat in the pads. So drove to the top and got heaps of heat on the way down
They are still not like modern brakes but good for a small bore mini.
