Dash & A pillar vinyl
I've tried 'Our Cars and Projects' and various internet/Parnell searches but I cant see that level of detail so a few questions on dash and A pillar vinyl if somebody can help:
1) When it comes to the lower dash vinyl, there is an area on the parcel shelf above the dash switch panel and directly behind the thinner middle section of the chrome finisher. How is that trimmed? Is it left body colour or are you meant to cover the raised area with black and then tuck the lower dash shelf brocade underneath?
2) A pillars. How far up the A-pillar do you go? Also how are these finished at the top towards the cant rail? There are two steps and I would say go for the upper part but I might as well get it looking right. Also are they double folded by say 10mm and then glued down?
Any photos or links appreciated
Thanks in advance
Mark

1. Body colour for the centre section, almond green in this picture.
2. Up to the curved cant rail for the A pillar, not doubled over but make a better job than I did with the cutting!

Re: Dash & A pillar vinyl
With the early cars Super de-lux & Cooper that had the A Post inner black trim glued to these weird shape steel uprights .. the covering Trim was Top & Bottom turned back over & Glued around these backing steels .. i seem to remember the front rexine part was trapped by the Windscreen Rubber & the back trapped by the Door Seal .. there is a single hole at the Top in these steel backings that i seem to remember a single self tapper held all this contraption in position .. unless my memory is wrong?
My Photos do not do justice to the multitude of curves within these pressings.
Decided not to fit these steel backings & glued rexine direct to inner A Post & turned over on itself & glue the Rexine at the Top .. might not be standard but worked for me .. each to there own .
There was a though that Austin had these items where the Morris did not.. someone other than me would know that answer ?

Don't do yourself down Bob - when I removed my originals they did not look so pretty at the top

Re: Dash & A pillar vinyl
The top of that A pillar section is nearly always rubbish on original cars. Everyone obviously found it a pain to fit that trim, I certainly do.
I have never got it done so I can stand back & think "That's a job well done". Hopefully one day I'll manage it. On my latest project I'm hoping to reuse the original stuff, have tried before, but not succeeded yet

Re: Dash & A pillar vinyl
Here to revive another thread. Yesterday I made an attempt to refit original dash vinyl to my car (63). It came as a set (all the same type of vinyl) from, what the seller claimed, was a mini. Yet I strangely ran into the following issue. The a pillar trim with the metal backing plates fit just fine, as does the lower dash rail. However the section for the top dash rail is long enough, yet has the openings for the demister vents are in the wrong spot.
They are too close to the center of the car. Hopefully you can see what i mean by the attached pic.
the first thing that sprang to mind is that it might have come from a Hornet / Elf. However in the parts list the dash panel itself has the same part number as the mini.
Any ideas which models had the vent openings in a different place?

Re: Dash & A pillar vinyl
I can't think of anything that is the same shape as a Mini, but has slots in a different place.
The texture of the vinyl also looks very wrong!
Should be a MUCH tighter pattern on an early car.

Re: Dash & A pillar vinyl
It's funny that you should mention that Mark, from what I've found the texture changed around 64 and it became very fine. In the following pic are three examples of what is believed to be original vinyl. Two of those I'm positive about, the middle one is from a 64 car.

Re: Dash & A pillar vinyl
Well my original 63 S that had never been buggered around with certainly had the fine middle one.
I can say that with 100% certainty.

Re: Dash & A pillar vinyl
Back in the 1970's I once went to fit the top dash vinyl retrieved from a Mk1 Mini Cooper that was in a breakers into a Mk3 Mini only to find the vent slots in the vinyl did not line up with the metal work.....I then discovered they had moved them over towards the centre on later shells, presumably to improve the window demisting area. The slots are the same length as early cars as the Mk1 vent metal trims fitted my Mk3 ok.Toby wrote: ↑Wed Jul 19, 2023 1:37 pm Here to revive another thread. However I can't remember now at what point the demist metal dash slots were moved. ie. Was it later Mk1, Mk2 or Mk3?
I therefore presume you have the top dash vinyl from a later Mini....later Minis measure approx. 340mm between the two inner/centre screws of the vent slots.

Re: Dash & A pillar vinyl
Later minis have the vents towards the ash tray . Fitted lots of those panels .. Don’t know the year change but if you buy a new heritage panel the vent holes are nearer the ash tray … Shirley

Re: Dash & A pillar vinyl
Never knew that either!!! I have the vinyl off one of our cars here, I think it was the early 64S, though it could have come off the 66S that is no longer with us. The texture is like the right hand pic in Toby's post, so would that be right???
