Brass slip ring on steering column - how to remove??

Post by gs.davies »

I don't want to break this so what's the correct method of removing it to enable access to the column bushes?

I tapped the bottom edge with a punch to slowly push it off the nylon collar.

It slides up, so the the crimps ride up out of the groove in the insulator.

As Tim says, tap gently around the other end to push it up.

Thanks - on my column the crimps face towards the indicator stalk - presume the drift should push from the non crimped end?

Yes, tap it towards the steering wheel side of the column. Try and keep the nylon piece static as it’s got an internal wire

Just did this last night, as others have said tap up from below, the black plastic insulator has a hole/sleeve where the spring loaded plunger is, this in turn is connected to the wire that protrudes from the column, mine was all intact just not making a decent contact, took it all apart and cleaned it and it works perfectly now. You may bur the end a little with the punch but simple to run a half moon file round it will soon have it sorted out. There was rust under the insulator sleeve on mine hence a tad tight but once cleaned up it went back on fine.

Does anyone sell the brass slip ring on its own, or is it just the £100 kit that Somerford sell https://www.somerfordmini.co.uk/slip-ri ... -horn-push

Do you mean one of these? A bit cheaper than a £100 kit :)

If the ring is stuck fast and tapping it up looks like it will damage the ring/plastic, in the past I've levered the tabs up a little to free them off, then used a jubilee clip to squeeze them back into position evenly when you refit everything.

And remember. . . .SOAK IT IN WD40 before you start doing anything. You should be able to get the brass collar turning before you start to try & slide it off.
