Help with Gearbox ID

Post by almond cooper »

I have a 22G1128 4 synchro solid remote G/box.
It has rubber coupling diff outputs, 22G1040 L/shaft.

Letters:- F/SM on the casing above the p/n.

Anyone have any ideas what this would have been out of?

Tnx.

Without looking it up myself, there is a complete breakdown of all the gearbox variables in the TECHNICAL section of the forum.

Clearly your1128 box will be close to the end, at the bottom of page 4. It's absolutley amazine the amount of combinations there are.....

PS. I've looked for the crib [ages but can't find them so thanks to Luis!

The laygear reference might be 22G1040 ( never seen a 22G1140) .. this would mean a 4 synchro close ratio gearset ( coupled to a 18 teeth input gear ).

With rubber coupling output shafts and solid remote housing , could be from an early 1275GT .

SM refers to the casting company : Stirling Metals

My apologies:-

LuisM. You are correct, it’s 22G1040.

I'd be more inclined to suggest the gearbox originally was a standard type of box fitted to most Minis of the era, and then had the close ratio laygear and 1st motion shaft fitted at a later time.

Is there a number stamped on the front on the opposite side to the 22G1128?

My 22G1128 with 22G1040 laygear, rubber couplings and solid mount remote is an early 1275GT box. Bought in about 1986 from local BL dealer as a silver seal unit.

Correct spelling is Sterling Metals. The Nuneaton site closed around 1986 and is now a thoroughly uninspiring housing estate.
The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who do not possess it.

Had plenty 22G1128 boxes with the close ratio gear set in over the years. The ones with the AD016 diff housing were standard fitment to the Austin 1300GT and the ones with the diff housing for the solid mini remote were fitted to the early GT’s until the 22G1832 Rod box was introduced using the same close ratio gearset(22G1040 laygear and 22G1371 18teeth first motion gear).
The MK3 S also utilised the 22G1128 box but usually with hardy spicer outputs rather than rubber couplings.

Jason I have a 22G1832 rod change box with the 22G1040 close ratio set etc . I take it that the gears will fit straight into a 22G1128 remote case . …. Ken

Hello.
Yes. It's only the 1040 laygear and the 18tooth first motion gear that's different. Other gears are the same ratio. You could....just swap these.

Hi Ken
As others have already said, the close ratio gears from your 1832 Rod box will fit straight into a 1128 remote.

Thanks for all the replies.

Looks like it’s most probably out of a early 1275GT then.

Sorting out some bits and pieces I’ve collected over the years, so it might be worth hanging on too.
