3 point belt fitting

Post by Aginley »

Hi, fitting 3 point harnes to the Mk1. Irvin type.
Whereabouts is recommended to fit the rear fastener? Seen some on top of the parcel shelf, some on the bottom of the rear bulkhead and also on the floor.
Pictures would be helpful
Thanks

i just moved mine on the new purchase from the parcel shelf to the bottom of the rear bulkhead. There is a metal bar welded to the underside of the parcel shelf to take it, and on the bulkhead we used the spreader plate design nuts. to be honest I really dont like them and will change to a conventional 3 point static lap belt.

There was quite a discussion on this some years ago when the parcel shelf was a popular location, but not the strongest - just look at where it fits next to the window for example.

Most manufacturers subsequently put in an angle of belt strap guidance. I can't recall exactly what it said, but the base of the seat back seemed the optimum spot on a mini. Later of course, seat belt reinforcements for the rear belts used the same spot.

Base of the rear seat where vertical & horizontal meet. Acceptable angle for the belts & a strong area, although as has already been said, a bar to screw the eyelets into is a good addition.

This way the belts are mounted in an acceptable manner & they can pass between the two halves of the seat, avoiding doing any damage to the cushions.

I would NEVER mount a belt to the parcel shelf after seeing the car that John Rhodes had his last big crash in. The parcel shelf peeled up like the ring pull on a Coke can.
