998 Cooper Spark plug choice
hi
is the NGK BP5ES the correct plug for a std Cooper 998? Champion N5 was original fit but not sure which is the best 'modern' equivalent...?

Champion N9Y (N9YC, N9YCC Copper Core versions) is a good alternative. It was used by BL in 998s and the Cooper S models.

Re: 998 Cooper Spark plug choice
N5 translates to a B6ES
Later on they went to the projected tip, noted by the “P” in the BP6ES. I’ve got some “unprojected” tip plugs to try but I haven’t had a chance to see them running yet. They are recommended by swiftune & KAD
In terms of heat range, 6 is a good place to start. 7 is a bit cooler for higher compression or boosted engines. 5 is a bit hotter, so it can help to burn oil if you have a worn engine
A colder plug will tend to foul easier and a hotter plug can cause irregular ignition events and run on if they stay really hot

Re: 998 Cooper Spark plug choice
In the past would of gone for a Champion N9Y, we thought it was an upgrade to the earlier spec`d N5s.... but these days only consider NGK.
NGK seem more reliable and better choice of specs...I would go with Mark (BP6ES) on standardish car and go for a BP8ES (bit cooler) on anything likely to get a continued thrashing.
Amazes me how cheap plugs are these days even quite fancy ones - back in the day we seemed to spend, proportionately, much more, especially on two stroke bike plugs...

Another vote for the NGK BP6ES here, always seem to work well on a standard(ish) car.

Mine ran better on Champion N5 or N5C as they now are rather than the NGK alternative
