67 Cooper S speedometer help

Post by Cooper S 148 »

Hi,
I have been a silly billy,
The inside of the speedo for my Cooper S project was dirty with cobwebs etc where it had been stored for 15+ years in a garage.
All was going well with the glass coming off OK and some very careful cleaning with fine brushes etc.
But
I must have caught something on the stop pin, one minute it was there the next it was gone.

Any ideas where I can get a replacement or how to replace these ?.

Any recommendations for getting it refurbished / repaired ?.
Thanks
Paul :(

It’s pretty easy to replace if it’s broken off.

Just need a pin from a donor speedo and they are held in place around the lower left hand light jewel.

I’ve probably got one you can have on an old speedo.

if you take the speedo out of the casing you will see how it fits on.

PM me if you need the pin after checking the back of the speedo face.

There’s also a chance it’s just been pushed in & it’s waiting to spring out when it’s lined up properly again

Easy to make them from .010" steel guitar or piano wire. Alas, and thinking on my feet, to replace it you've really got to remove the front screen because while they're pretty much squaddie proof, they're delicate instruments

Forgot to say, if you need the 5mm dia rubber O ring material that goes between the chrome bezel and the glass, let me know.

Incidentally, same for the temp and oil gauges is 2mm....... and the O ring for these, that fits between the instrument bezel and fascia = 1mm. Not a lot of people know that.......

As for refurbed or repaired, look at the recommendations section in the index. Odstick Instruments recalibrated one for me recently

Thanks everyone,
I managed to get it all apart and the pin has snapped off as the retaining part under the face is still in place.

Just hope I manage to put it back together when I have a replacement pin in place and that it works

On the Australian made speedos the pin has a flat coil of wire at the back and is held in place with a piece of sticky tape to the back of the face. A bent paperclip would do.

The STOP-PIN has got to be a spring steel or similar spring material. Because after replacing the screen/dial the pointer has to be placed onto the taper-lock spindle, with the spindle in its neutral position as this is the point from which the spring loaded but magnetically controlled speed calibration is set. This neutral position will always be BEHIND the stop pin. So to get the pointer from it's neutral position BEHIND the stop-pin, to AHEAD of the stop-pin, you've got to gently bend the springy stop-pin and equally gently lift the pointer clear and......job done - hopefully

Done it hundreds of times after a time served apprenticeship learning such things
