Rear bump stop, DRY suspension
I'm in the process of putting together my subframe and have noticed in the AKD3509 manual and on the Somerford drawings, there is a bump stop which fits in the subframe behind the cone to prevent it bottoming out. Are these supposed to be present on a 1961 car? I certainly don't recall taking them off when I stripped the subframe in the first place and I don't recall seeing them there on any other cars.
Or is this a hydrolastic-only thing?
Cheers,
Gary

Re: Rear bump stop, DRY suspension
The bump stop is fitted to wet suspension cars, the bump stop itself is actually on the radius arm.

Re: Rear bump stop, DRY suspension
Not sure about that Dan. There's a mushroom headed buffer bolted to the sub frame that buffers the radius/swinging arm in its fully DOWN position. There is a big bump stop on the top of the arm of course

I think Gary is talking about the one fitted to the ERA cars that goes between the cone itself and the subframe. Don’t think they were fitted to anything else.

I bought a Mini 1100 Special wheel arch kit from Austin Rover in the mid 80's that included the steel mushroom shaped bump stop extension that should have been installed in the cones seat in the rear subframe. It was secured with a starlock washer.
I wonder if this bumpstop extension was fitted to the mini 1100 special.

That sounds like the part. However it dates as far back at least as the AKD3509 Manual which must be 1962?imack wrote: ↑Wed Jun 15, 2022 6:28 pm I bought a Mini 1100 Special wheel arch kit from Austin Rover in the mid 80's that included the steel mushroom shaped bump stop extension that should have been installed in the cones seat in the rear subframe. Do you mean part 45 here: https://www.somerfordmini.co.uk/rear-su ... ubber-cone
That’s an amalgamation of the parts books.

Re: Rear bump stop, DRY suspension
Thats interesting, so it stops the rubber donut compressing past a certain point?

Re: Rear bump stop, DRY suspension
I take them off when fitted and on some cars, depending on use, cut the 'tit' out of the subframe. All these do is break the trailing arm pin.

Re: Rear bump stop, DRY suspension
These are also found on the later Sportpack mini with 13'' wheels to stop them bottoming out on the rear .

Re: Rear bump stop, DRY suspension
Thanks all, some good chat on here.
I presume for a car on 10 inch wheels, 145 tyres and standard ride height, I don’t need these parts?

Re: Rear bump stop, DRY suspension
If you are on tens and dry and at a standard ride height I dont think they can physically compress enough to bottom out.
I was looking for bump stops a while back and found ones that bolt to the inner rear arch, I was unaware of the type fitted to sports pack minis.
I've got mates with modern ish minis so I'll probably come across them at some point.

Re: Rear bump stop, DRY suspension
The wheel arch kit I bought was for the 1979 1100 mini special, it contained these bump stop extensions.
I guess standard 4.5" rims with 145/10's will tuck up inside the arch ok at full compression but maybe the 5x10 exactons with 165/70/10's could potentially foul the arch lip at full compression. The mini special wheel arch fitted below the standard arch lip aswell, so reducing clearance even more.
I wonder if these bumpstop extensions were fitted to other 10" wheel models that left the factory with that arch/ wheel/ tyre combination - Mayfairs, Sprites and 1100 Specials.

Re: Rear bump stop, DRY suspension
What interests me is that they’re listed in AKD3509 which is pre hydro cooper and S… so the exacton rim was a while off at that point.imack wrote: ↑Fri Jun 17, 2022 9:41 am The wheel arch kit I bought was for the 1979 1100 mini special, it contained these bump stop extensions.

They're listed as fitted to pre hydro Cooper S at Somerfords and minisport.
