Thermostat recommendations

Post by tweedy998 »

Hi all,

I'm just about to start putting Tweedy's engine back together after a little issue with an ancient head gasket and am looking to put in a new thermostat upon re-assembly. We've never had any overheating problems, however, I've no idea what thermostat we've been running.

I was thinking of just going middle ground with an 82degree item. Any advice would be most welcome.

Engine is a 998 +60 with 12G295 head, I'm aiming for a CR ratio of around 10.5. The car is used 'properly' when driven, so need it to be a reasonably reliable, strong set up, which I feel I'm achieving with the new componentry which will be going into the works.

Cheers! Ed.

You should find the rating stamped into the stat, either on the edge...

...or on the lower surface of the centre part.

I have finished my 998 cooper, which has been built as standard.

I had the original 3 core radiator recored and ran on a 82 deg thermostat. Around town/country lanes etc the car ran superbly and never got hot.

I did noticed that on long runs (above 60 mph) the temperature started to climb slowly. Slowing down to 55 mph brought the temperature back down again to the 'N' position.

After speaking to various members it was put down to the 16 blade metal fan restricting the air flow at the the higher speeds.

The options I had was to to either change to an different fan (export or newer plastic fan) or to change the radiator.

I went for a two core radiator from mini spares and have just done a 490 miles round trip @65 -70 mph and the car never ran hot.

Therefore I would recommend if you are planning to do higher speeds for a longer time (greater than 5- 10 mins), I would consider the options above.

Cheers for the responses guys! Much appreciated.

I have run Mini Spares 2 core rads in the past with good results. So this could indeed be something for me to consider for 'Tweedy' too, though I have done some sustained high speed running on the motorway and not had any temp issues, having a capillary gauge fitted helps keep tabs on the exact temps. All food for thought.
