Hi everyone,
I'm helping out a friend and am slightly confused about what is needed to convert a 22G68 gearbox with "standard" 22G231 laygear to a 22G232/22G1100 close ratio gear set.
I've read (I think on here) that a 22G232/22G1100 laygear and 22A982/22G322 1st motion shaft will "go straight in", but that doesn't sound right because 3rd gear is different as well. The close ratio gear set uses 22A983 third gear which has 24 teeth whereas the standard gear set uses 22A981 third gear which has 23 teeth.
What am I missing?
thanks very much
Simon

There is a full tech breakdown of the various gearbox specs on the technical section of the forum. Your answer -0 and MUCH more - will be there, believe me!

thanks Peter - are you talking about this document? https://mk1-performance-conversions.co.uk/gearteeth.pdf
it doesn't really tell me anything I didn't know already, we definitely need a 22A983, don't we.. ?

The Cooper ‘close ratio’ box does have a different 3rd gear, as you quite rightly say, to standard boxes.
