Ital A+ to Midget 1275 gearbox

Post by Tom Rae »

I hope this is in the right place! I am currently modifying a Ital A+ engine to fit a 1275 Midget gearbox for my 1961 Lotus 7. I am using the standard A+ crank so I understand I will need to machine/modify a 1275 flywheel to fit the A+ crank. Does anyone have drawings for this or could you possibly point me in the right direction to find some?

Hi Tom,

In situations like this I recommend giving all the parts to Stuart Pollock or Engine Services with a cry of 'Make the toys work!' then waiting for the phone call to say it's done.

Cheers Al, I didn't know if they did machining! I haven't yet sourced a 1275 flywheel, I was waiting to be sure it was the right way to go.

I have now found out that the bolt holes are the same but the recess needs to enlarged to match the crank boss accurately so not such a big job after all.

Robb just bought a Lathe. Not sure if it's deep enough to turn a flywheel though. He might be worth asking, he'll be looking for reasons to use it :)

Sounds like an interesting project.

What's it for?

Peter May Engineering https://www.petermayengineering.com/ would certainly understand and undertake this work for you. I've always found them to be very helpful.

I had them do exactly this job for me when I was racing an Austin Healey Sprite.

Cheers, I think I may be able to find one closer but useful if I can't!

Taking a standard Ital A+ engine, this is the list of parts required for fitting to a standard 1275 Midget gearbox for use in a Midget or 7. I will add to this as the project progresses and I find out what else I need.

1. Midget 1275 Front plate
2. Midget timing chain cover
3. Midget engine back plate (locating pin needs reducing or gearbox hole enlarging)
4. Modified 1275 Midget flywheel and clutch assembly
