61 year old rear subframe

Post by bwaminispeed »

Who would have thunk, a 61 year old rear subframe out of a Morris Mini Woody Traveler would have survived this well.....

Very little (mostly surface) rust, and, not a single perforation anywhere....

Frame, along with the front one, and, the entire shell were acid dipped (would never do that again).....only three perforations in the shell, all, around 1 square inch in size.....car is pretty amazing for it's age....

Once back from the dippers, frame was soaped down, and, power washed.....when dry, I gave it a couple of coats of ValSpar Rust Reformer, pretty amazing stuff, it really does seal rust up solid.....

In a couple of days (the Rust Reformer needs to dry out for a couple of days before paint will stick to it), I'll give it light shot of some kind of shiny black paint......

Pics on the way, gotta shrink them a bit....

Well, you got me beat...my 61 Elf has the original subframes...however, in all fairness....38K miles and the car has been in storage here since 1972....and, we are in an extremely dry climate (14 inches of rain a year)
Well done....nice to see that...notice the little bracket on the rear end for the jack.
If it has the original front frame it should have the MOWOG stencil in white....not yellow.

This one has a bit over 40K Miles.....

Wasn't much paint on the front subframe, but, also, not much rust.......Anything that might have been there dissapeared with the acid dip...

Car came out of Edmonton Alberta up in Canada...

Here's the trailing arm, dipped and, lightly wire wheeled......These are the early pressed steel welded up arms as on the earlier cars.......As you can see, very little corrosion....these items are usually very heavily pitted and, rusted through.....

Why do you say never again to acid dipping?

I've just have a rear subframe sandblasted and powder coated.

I dont know its exact age, 59/60/61 early 62 but it has MOWOG stamped in to it, the original steel trumpets and and the old style press radius arms.

Interesting. I'm next door in BC and a friend and I were talking about these early Woodies(61). I picked one up from the Trail area and he picked up two from the same area before we knew each other. Seems there was a dealer in the Kootenany's that must have received a boat load. Our theory for the cars out here is they were underpowered for the mountainous terrain, burned out early and stored away. Considering their age they're in pretty good shape. We just sold one of his that had very little rust.
Good luck with your project, I look forward to meeting perhaps at Mini Meet West?
